CNN —Manchester United’s season reached a new low on Monday after being thrashed 4-0 by Crystal Palace in the Premier League, a result which heaped more pressure on a club in crisis. The scoreline could have been more emphatic had United’s opponent been more clinical, but the defeat was still United’s heaviest in a poor season. The 20-time league champion now sits eighth in the table – United has never finished below seventh in the Premier League era. “As Manchester United, we should perform better. Crystal Palace was brilliant and could have scored more against Manchester United.

A record win for Arsenal. After Arsenal hammered West Ham 6-0 for its biggest ever Premier League away victory, United beat Aston Villa 2-1 in a huge result in the race for Champions League qualification. Bukayo Saka scored twice and Declan Rice — a former West Ham favorite — added the sixth goal almost apologetically. Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United and has now netted in five straight league matches. Signed in July for 105 million pounds (then $138 million), it is looking like money well spent by Arsenal.

United’s goals, scored by Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford, were things of beauty at the start and end of the first half. Ratcliffe, the owner of petrochemicals giant INEOS, agreed last month to buy a minority stake in United and will take charge of United’s soccer operations. The deal requires Premier League approval, which Ratcliffe said Sunday he expects to come next month. “I have done a few exciting things," the British billionaire told media before kickoff, "but this caps it all. MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Erik ten Hag can breathe a sigh of relief after Manchester United ended another difficult week on a winning note. Victor Lindelof's goal secured a 1-0 win against Luton in the Premier League on Saturday that should hold back further speculation about Ten Hag's future for now. It wasn't the most convincing performance from a United team that had lost 4-3 against Copenhagen in the Champions League in midweek. It was vital Ten Hag secured a win ahead of the upcoming international break, with questions raised about his position in recent weeks. GOAL DROUGHTLife would be a lot easier for Ten Hag if striker Rasmus Hojlund could emulate his Champions League form in the Premier League.

Before the mayhem of Monday's home defeat against Chelsea, Wolves away would have been viewed as another opportunity for Tottenham to underline their top-four credentials. But that 4-1 reverse, Postecoglou's first setback in the Premier League, could cost the north London club more than a return to top spot and the loss of three points. A tumultuous derby ended with Tottenham having only four of their starting line-up left on the pitch. A home game against City will perhaps say a lot more about whether or not Chelsea have turned a corner. Former midfielder Paul Scholes believes Ten Hag still has some credit left in the bank after last season when United finished third in the Premier League and won the League Cup.

"The red card changes everything," a beleaguered Ten Hag told TNT Sports. "We controlled the game until the red card. The night marked the first Champions League loss for United in which they led by two or more goals. It was their first defeat after taking a two-goal lead in all competitions since a 5-3 loss to Leicester City in September 2014. Man United boss Ten Hag laments 'harsh' Rashford red card

"I think first we played very good until the red card. The red card changed everything. Rashford's red card was given after he planted his foot on the ankle of Elias Jelert to protect the ball and it drew the ire of Ten Hag. The loss was United's first in the Champions League in which they led by two or more goals. Ten Hag said the Rashford red was not the first questionable decision that has gone against them this season.

MANCHESTER, England, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Manchester United under-fire manager Erik Ten Hag came out fighting during a media grilling on Friday ahead of his faltering side's Premier League trip to Fulham. Ten Hag, however, remains defiant and said the mood in the camp was to put things right after back-to-back 3-0 home losses to Manchester City and Newcastle United. But this squad is strong, the staff is strong and this manager is strong to put this right." Eighth-placed United have lost half their Premier League games and five of their first 10 home matches in all competitions. "I came here with my philosophy based on possession but also to combine it with the DNA of Manchester United and combine it with the players, the competencies and the characters of the players.

Man Utd predicts higher annual revenue as sale process drags on

The English Premier League club, whose future ownership remains uncertain as the Glazer family explore a potential sale, did not give any update on that process, which started nearly a year ago. Manchester United expect revenue of between 650 million and 680 million pounds for the fiscal year to June 2024, compared with 648.4 million in 2022/23. The club forecast adjusted core profit of between 140 million and 165 million pounds, compared with 155 million in 2022/23. For the quarter ended June 30, Manchester United reported a net loss of nearly 3 million pounds ($3.50 million), compared with a loss of 71 million pounds a year earlier. Annual net losses narrowed by 75% to 29 million pounds.

Man Utd show signs of life, but City offer real test

Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999. Sixth-placed Newcastle United will have to shrug off the disappointment of their Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Charlton, who was a key figure in England's 1966 World Cup-winning team, died at the age of 86 on Saturday. He helped United win the European Cup in 1968 and three English league titles as well as the FA Cup. "Bobby was a legend - a giant not only for Manchester United, but for football. We have to live it every day," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Tuesday's home game against FC Copenhagen. A mistake from United goalkeeper Andre Onana forced Brazilian midfielder Casemiro to conceded a penalty, which saw him sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Bayern Munich are top on six points from two games after a 2-1 win at FC Copenhagen, who are third with one point. "Our opponents are maybe not very successful on the outside but they are a good team," Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk said. Fightbacks were the order of the day as Liverpool recovered from falling behind to win 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the early kickoff and two goals deep into stoppage time earned Tottenham Hotspur a 2-1 win over Sheffield United. After another tumultuous week off the pitch for Manchester United, the club needed the players to lift their supporters. United fell behind in the 20th minute when Danny Welbeck slotted home against his former club when left unmarked in the penalty area. "Definitely that (losing three from five for the first time in Premier League history) is something that bothers me, but also I have to seen the way we play," coach Erik ten Hag said. Scott McTominay moved ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane as the joint leading scorer in European Championship qualifying with Scotland on the brink of securing a place at next year's tournament. Manchester United midfielder McTominay claimed his sixth goal in qualifying for Euro 2024 as Scotland stayed ahead of Spain in the group on a maximum 15 points after five straight wins. Scotland needs two more points to ensure its place at the tournament, which will be held in Germany. The transfer window, which was open from June 14 to Sept. 1, exceeded last year's record 1.92 billion pounds, with the top-flight clubs spending 255 million pounds on deadline day alone, it said. Premier League clubs were responsible for 48% of the spending across Europe's top five leagues including Spain's LaLiga, Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1. "Nearly three-quarters of Premier League clubs (14) spent more this summer than the last, reflecting the increased intensity of competition. Champions Manchester City signed midfielder Matheus Nunes for 53 million pounds this week, having brought Jeremy Doku for 55 million pounds, defender Josko Gvardiol for 77 million and midfielder Mateo Kovacic for 25 million earlier. Ten Hag primed to end false dawns at Man United

Since United last won the Premier League title under Alex Ferguson in 2013, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have all failed to revive former glories - but Ten Hag appears to be making progress. Last year, he took charge of a United side that had collected their lowest-ever Premier League points tally (58) in the 2021-22 season and were in a five-year trophy drought. The turnaround has been remarkable, with a top-four finish in the Premier League, the League Cup trophy and a place in the FA Cup final to show for last season. "I think the difference is, with reference to last year, now we have the foundation with this squad," Ten Hag told reporters. If Ten Hag can stop the uncertainty over the club's ownership from spilling over into his dressing room, United have reason to believe they can challenge seriously to win the Premier League and end the recent dominance of Manchester City.

Maurizio Sarri's Lazio side face a tough test in Milan, who have been unbeaten at San Siro in their last eight games in all competitions. Lazio have 64 points ahead of Juve (63) and Inter Milan (60) with Atalanta, Milan and AS Roma (58) jostling for the top four. Pioli, whose Milan team were dethroned by Napoli in the league, also have a Champions League semi-final, first leg against Inter on Wednesday to think about. "Last year we took big steps forward when we came out of the Champions League, while this year in Europe we're doing exceptional things."
